Last week we told you about the great talent of 12 Catalan poets. Today, it’s time to talk about music and one of the great Catalan composers of the second half of the 20th century: Xavier Montsalvatge.

No wonder that Montsalvatge was considered from a very early age a great future artist. The composer was fortunate enough to be born into an art-loving family and his life was spent in an environment open to any kind of cultural and artistic influences.

When he was young, Xavier met artists, musicians and writers of the time. People such as Joan Miró, Josep Pla, Montserrat Caballé and Antoni Tàpies, among others. A relentless river of influences that would turn him into a total artist. A composer, a musician, a critic and an exceptional witness to 20th century music.

This year, to mark 100 years since his birth, the Palau Robert gives us the opportunity to meet this major artists in the exhibition Xavier Montsalvatge, composer. 1912-2012 that spreads the word about his diverse catalogue of musical works. The exhibition includes both biographical information and photographs, manuscripts, letters and articles, among others. The richness and variety of documents is not to be missed.

The exhibition, sponsored by the Department de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya and organized by Acción Cultural Española, will be on until June 10th in the Sala 2 of the Palau Robert. Owing to its small format, after Barcelona it will also be exhibited at the Girona City History Museum, the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and the Julliard School of Music in New York.
