Goya, The First Modern Artist
The exhibition Goya, Lights and Shadows offers a chronological journey through his work and shows its technical and thematic richness.
If I say Goya, I’m certain that one of the thousands of inspirational images he has painted over the years will come to mind.
True, we are not the first nor the last to laude this exceptional painter. Throwing a few praises and compliments here and there onto a mound that has long been overflowing, what for? Goya and his work can stand on their own two feet to show that he was an exceptional master and key artist in the history of universal and Spanish art. Nothing more is needed.
So we are going to talk about what does need talking about: the exhibition Goya, lights and shadows that Barcelona is hosting until June 24th in the Barcelona CaixaForum. An exhibition of nearly one hundred works that proves to be a good opportunity to familiarise ourselves with Goya’s brilliant work.
Through an important selection of paintings, prints and drawings from the Prado Museum, the major issues addressed by Goya throughout his life are analysed: war, religion, how woman are viewed or a criticism of bullfighting among others. All through the various stories which illustrate the social reality of the time.
An exhibition that ultimately gives us the opportunity to travel the road that Goya drew during his life, treading in his own footsteps and seeing paintings as renowned and appreciated by the public as La maja vestida, La sombrilla, Vuelo de brujas, or Todavía aprendo.
