Cellars. Cooperativism & Modernism
An exhibition that shows the artistic and architectural value of wine cellars built at the beginning of the 20th century.
They say that Catalonia is a land of wine, good wine. The wine tradition began more than 200 years ago and, like everything else, it has gone through moments of glory and decadence.
The exhibition “Bodegas. Cooperativismo + Modernismo“, which can be visited at the CaixaForum until October 14, speaks of a major crisis in the wine industry during the early 20th century. What started as a battle between peasants and landowners turned into cooperativism. Or, in other words, the joining of forces in order to succeed.
Cooperativism became modernism’s best friend, which led to the construction of thirty wineries of great artistic value and unsurpassed architectural uniqueness. They have become known as the “modernist cellars” or “wine cathedrals”.
Through the exhibition we can find out about these great architectural works that are to be found throughout Catalonia and the ways in which they boosted agricultural modernisation and left a legacy of the modernist art.
After visiting the exhibition you will perhaps feel like seeing one of these incredible places first hand. It would be a refreshing complimentary visit that would leave our taste buds wanting more.
