The borders of language

In the First Circle, a project by Imogen Stidworthy, presents in the Fundació Antoni Tàpies an exhibition that reflects on language.

In the exhibition In the First Circle Imogen Stidworthy takes as its starting point a series of works that seek to reflect on the types of language and non-language. Through the work of more than twenty contemporary artists, including Antoni Tapies, the exhibition will explore and analyse contact, entanglement and transfer of meaning between different languages. How a number of terms change into other ones as well the concepts of opacity and relational strength.

The works have been selected by the curator Paul Domena and Stidworthy herself, who is taking part as both artist and curator. The works will be the stepping stones for a journey where language permeates images, materials, gestures and documents.

The exhibition is the second phase of the Die Lucky Bush project that was held in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp in 2008. Both exhibitions can be seen as an extension of Stidworthy’s artistic vision, as each one is a landscape of works dealing with and reflecting on contacts, connections and conflicts between languages.
