Roldós and the pioneers of advertising
The new exhibition in the Palau Robert reviews the birth and evolution of modern advertising in Catalonia and the important role of Rafael Roldós and other pioneers.
It was the first one documented advertising in our country and founder in 1872 of the “Centre of Announcements Roldós and Company“, the first advertising agency of the Spanish State, still active. Rafael Roldós and other pioneers such as Pere Prat Gabalí, Rafael Borí, José Gardó or Malcolm Thomson were the fathers of modern advertising and they established the bases to be considered today Barcelona one of the world capitals of advertising.
The exhibition “Advertising in Catalunya 1857-1957. Roldós and the pioneers” offers a tour through the first century of advertising activity in Catalonia via historical images, signs and posters such as Cerebrino Mandri, Codorniu, Potax…that is to say, hundred years where advertising far from the glamour and sophistication of our days, it was a craft as traditional as any other.
Jointly organized by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Faculty of Communication Blanquerna, the exhibition embraces three periods: 1857-1990, the birth of the first agencies; 1901-1929, a period where advertising is technified and incorporated to the academic world; and 1930-1957, when the appearance of new formats such as television changed the face of advertising.
