Graphic Memory of the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714
Palau Robert exposes a selection of prints and writings on the War of the Spanish Succession in Catalonia.
The Palau Robert presents the exhibition “1714. Graphic Memory of a War”, which provides an opportunity to view a selection of prints and writings on the War of the Spanish Succession in Catalonia. The exhibition is open to visitors from 8 May to 29 June in Room 4 in the Palau Robert.
The exhibition is one of a series of activities organised to commemorate the tercentenary of the events of 1714, which resulted in Catalonia’s loss of its national governing bodies at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession.
The display consists of some 80 reproductions of prints held by various collectors and archives around Europe. These prints trace the course of the main events of the war in Catalonia and are accompanied by explanatory texts in Catalan, English and Spanish. An audio-visual presentation includes other graphic works.
This touring exhibition is divided into ten sections and presents the war from a number of different perspectives: its history, art and mapmaking in the 18th century, and the way in which a collective imaginary of the events developed in the 19th century and proved to be an important reference for the Catalanist movement during the Renaixença (renaissance).
The exhibition curator, Mercè Morales, holds a PhD in history, awarded by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, is a member of the Board of the Catalan History Studies Society (part of the Catalan Studies Institute) and has written a number of articles and books on history. Her publications include “Parlament de Catalunya. República, guerra civil i exili”, “La Generalitat de Josep Irla i l’exili polític català” and “Memòria Gràfica de la Guerra de Successió” (published by Base).
