Honouring the Earth
The Fundació Suñol presents Acte 22: Joana Cera Bernad, No Varying Sizes, a work that asks the Earth for help in facing current times.
Joana Cera, creator of No Varying Sizes, says that “we live in a magical world and life as a whole is symbolic”. We suppose that this is one of the feelings that that she wants to convey with her work: an installation that honours the Earth and confronts its purity with the current excesses of man.
The work, which can be seen until April 28th, gives out a mystical feeling both in its meaning and in the elements that form it. In a first layer are newspapers, the symbol of the malaise of our world. Then we find upon it a layer of 330 clay lozenges and, on top of that, 72 previously-purified crystals placed at random.
The artist takes a non-manipulative stance to affirm that our ‘excessive’ attitude is variable. Thus, the original forms of the materials are left intact and the amorphous, impenetrable mud is contrasted with the linear perfection and transparency of glass.
The assembly process of the installation, which has been videotaped, is the heart of this work and part of it just as much as the finished piece itself. We invite you to watch it before going to see the work.
