The easel and brushes are dead. Long live action painting! In a nutshell, that would be the irruption of action painting into the art scene back in the 40s when it broke down the barriers between painting and performance. Suddenly, the creative process of the artist became more important than the work itself. Sensations such as strength and speed were reflected on a canvas in the form of wild strokes, dents or scratches. Abstraction had never been so physical.
“Explosion! The Legacy of Jackson Pollock” investigates the network of influences and connections that were generated from action painting, whose main exponent was Jackson Pollock. Later on, his experimental and conceptual approach to painting inspired many other artists. The exhibition at the Miró Foundation offers a geographical and chronological overview of action painting. It includes works made with various techniques by artists such as Pollock himself, Yves Klein, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Allan Kaprow, Andy Warhol, Lynda Benglis, Saburo Murakami, Bruce Nauman, John Baldessari, and Paul McCarthy among others.
