Lights and shadows between two centuries
A great opportunity to relate two artistic adventures separated by a century but linked by the research of light and composition.
It’s always great when you get to see an artists’ work in its entirety, and the retrospective of the catalan photographer Antoni Arissa currently on at CCCB has made him jump up several places in our estimation, showing him to be a unique voice from the turn of the 20th century with echoes of Sudek or Brassai’s work in Paris.
Thanks to an exhaustive process of researching, archiving and reproduction of previously undeveloped negatives, the exhibition also throws up some surprises in the form of experimental works that reflect the concerns of an artist working at the height of the industrial revolution. A native of Sant Andreu, Arissa combined his work as a photographer alongside a job at the printing press run by his father. This show, produced by Fundación Telefonica, and curated by Rafael Levenfeld and Valentín Vallhonrat, is the first exhibition of it’s kind.
Running parallel to the exhibition is Kazuhiro Goshima’s 3D installation Shadowland. A 15 minute piece that in its use of light and composition provides a perfect companion piece to the catalan artist, despite being made almost a century apart. The exhibition runs until 12th April.
