Vanity Fair: a century of photos on the street

The legendary American magazine celebrates its first century since its first issue with an outdoor photo-exhibition in Passeig de Gràcia.

These days it’s easier than usual to meet familiar faces along Passeig de Gràcia. Walking along the stretch from carrer Aragó to Gran Via — on the side of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel — we can stumble upon Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson, Martin Scorsese, Lady Gaga… And even Charles Chaplin, Jean Harlow and Gary Cooper. This is not a strange case of celebrity abduction, it’s the photo exhibition commemorating the first century of Vanity Fair.

The exhibition, titled Hall of Fame, comprises a selection of 60 historical images from the magazine taken by top portrait photographers like Edward Steichen, Annie Leibovitz, Man Ray, Norman Jean Roy and Mario Sorrenti. According to Debra Smith, curator of the exhibition, “the image selection and the setting up of the exhibition is based on the parallelism between two periods and their characters. What glamour, intelligence and humour has been and what it is now”.

The exhibition is included among the activities for The Brandery and will be on until February 2nd. A unique opportunity to enjoy in all their glory some photos that have become true icons of modern photography.
