Brands, S.O.S.

The current situation requires that brands and their clients take a greater responsibility in manufacturing products and in consuming them. We're all accountable.

The prestigious avenue in Barcelona is increasingly sought after by international brands. Bottega Veneta, Stella McCartney, Zadig&Voltaire, or Abercrombie&Fitch are going to set up shops during 2012. Not forgetting the long awaited Apple significant store at the corner with Plaça Catalunya.

We love brands. If we look within ourselves we’ll find that we’re undoubtedly connected to more than one. Some have ledger themselves deep inside us, others not so much, but on more than one occasion we certainly fell a passion for them and we are able to stand up for them as if they were a part of us.

It is now more important for many of the leading brands, brands that stack up millions in profits year after year, to have a greater sense of responsibility, they must become active agents in the global economic recovery with the support of local governments.

Customers and consumers, increasingly concerned about making ends meet, have come to love these brands. It is time to show what they can do to make things better. Often outraged by the corruption and wrong doing of many, the consumer must also be a main actor with an important part of responsibility in the process. And that is exactly what they are proving. No excuses.

How unusual that two contradictory events took place on the same week: The Shopping Night Barcelona and Día sin compras [No shopping day], one at Passeig de Gràcia and the other in Plaça Catalunya.Second-hand clothes exchanges are also on the rise, such as LostAndFound Bcn or Noarderias. This shows that people are aware of the situation. It isn’t the end of the world, but we must think about what we want out world to be like.

Responsible consumption is very important, as is responsible production and manufacturing, or consumption of quality content on the Internet. It’s not just about showing solidarity to others, which we really do need, but also showing solidarity to the planet we inhabit. The planet we inhabit together.

The above video is probably well-known by many, as it was the 2010 Oscar winner in the Animated Short Film category. A piece directed by François Alaux, Hervé de Crecy and Ludovic Houplain from the French studio h5, which has delighted us before with Alex Gopher video.Worth mentioning are the end credits, a tribute to the Eames masterpiece Powers of Ten.
