The Hunger Monster

The photo exhibition "Famine Alert – Prevent Hunger!" reveals the severe food crisis in the Horn of Africa and in the Sahel.

With all that is going on in Europe it’s very easy to forget that other places are much worse off than us. There talk is not of recession, deficits, banks or market funds… The crisis facing the Horn of Africa and the Sahel takes place in a very different scenario. Their daily struggle is against the most terrible of enemies: hunger.

The humanitarian crisis we are speaking of affects more than 13 million people. A number that would exceed the combined population of Hungary, Belgium and Greece. This crisis, focused on malnutrition and food insecurity, began in summer 2011 in the Horn of Africa in countries such as Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti. Since 2012, it has also affected the Sahel region, notably in Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, South Sudan and Cameroon.

It all started with the worst drought known the region has lived in 60 years. Today, families have lost their livelihoods, food prices have increased and all causes of malnutrition rates continue to grow with nothing to stop them.

The exhibition “Famine Alert – Prevent Hunger!” will be on until September 2. It’s organised by the Catalan Committee for Emergency Humanitarian Aid to raise public awareness about the causes and the serious problems this crisis is generating.

The images we see through the aisles of a dummy supermarket in Sala 4 in Palau Robert are photographs provided by NGOs working in the area. The story follows through 4 areas: the causes of famine, daily life with famine, child malnutrition and what can you do to help?

We recommend you visit the exhibition and see for yourselves what the situation in the Horn of Africa and the Sahel is like. You can always do something, at least let’s not forget them.
