L’Alternativa: the Barcelona Independent Film Festival is Back

From November 20 to 25, Barcelona will once again turn into the European capital of independent film.

There really is cinema beyond the Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. In late November, Barcelona will be hosting independent filmmakers and their outsider outlook in L’Alternativa, the city’s independent film festival. For the 2012 edition, the festival has reduced the number of days and films scheduled but it has not scarified innovation, creative independence or the critical reflection that have always characterised it.

New to this year’s edition is that the Filmoteca de Catalunya has become one of the festival’s partners and its new building in El Raval will be used for some of the screenings. The festival will also be held at other venues: the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), the French Institute and the Casa Amèrica Catalunya.

After nineteen editions, L’Alternativa is now known as one of the leading film and cultural events in Barcelona, and is placed internationally among the most important independent film festivals in Europe. It has become a reference event to discover and launch the most innovative contemporary cinema. It is just about the only chance we will have in Spain to see most of the films presented there. Authors who presented their first films in L’Alternativa are now in some of the major international festivals.

This year, one of the highlights of the festival guests will be Pedro Costa. He is one of the most interesting people in the current film scene and is considered an innovator and one of the most important filmmakers of the new generation.
